The 100 Collector Theory and the Visual Artist's Advantage

Most artists can make 1000 originals in a lifetime. 33 pieces a year for 30 years yields 999 originals. (Your mileage may vary.)

Buying 3 - 5 items on average, 100 collectors might buy as much as half the work you produce. They are a small, but mighty, force to influence and boost your career in ways you cannot imagine.

Think about it. You are 100 relationships with collectors away from selling half or more of every original piece you make to this small group.

The Magic of Collecting Collectors!

Let me introduce to you the concept of compounding collectors. You learned about the magic of compound interest in school. Compound interest is one of the most powerful concepts in finance.

Albert Einstein called it “the greatest mathematical discovery of all time.” It pays interest on principal and interest. As a result, it grows faster than simple interest, which only pays on the principal amount.

Collectors differ from buyers because they want to know and support artists. They will buy many pieces. A sales connection with 100 buyers will net 100 pieces sold. Make sales connections with 100 collectors you will sell 300 - 500 artworks, on average.

About the Trainer

I began advising artists in 1988 as a rep for Decor Magazine. It was the "Bible" of art business publications for decades. Unfortunately, the Internet crushed it and many other trade magazines. Then the horrific 9/11 attacks helped to finish off art trade shows. It was sad to see this all happen so fast, and to see my job fade away with the changes.

I am a skilled fine woodworker, talented furniture designer, and clock maker.  My love for fine art and artists began at an early age. I am the son of an exceptional painter. Our home was filled with books on art and artists. Sunday trips to the St. Louis Art Museum were a regular treat.
