Technology trends - mobile computingChanging technology trends determine how businesses communicate with their customers. To be most successful in 2013, here are some things to look for:

  1. Mobile Tech is Rocking. Smart phones and tablets are rapidly overtaking desktop and laptop usage. Mobile technology trends are changing the way your customers shop for nearly everything, and how they do business.
  2. Owning a Smart Phone and Tablet. Your customers are increasingly shopping, finding art, reading blogs and communicating via their smartphones. Using this technology will help you to understand how it is changing art marketing, e-commerce, and much more. An additional benefit to owning a tablet is it makes showing your portfolio anywhere, anytime easy… and you can take payments with a Square card reader.
  3. Mobile Responsive Is Imperative. A responsive website automatically changes to fit the device you’re reading it on. Making your website and blog “mobile responsive” is MISSION CRITICAL. Responsive web design provides an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices. When a website is responsive, the layout and/or content responds or adapts based on the size of screen they are presented on.
  4. Virtual Assistants and Freelancers Usage Rising. According to the  MBO Partners’ second annual State of Independence in America study, the number of freelancers and VAs will grow from nearly 17 million to 23 million in the next five years. This means you will find it easier to hire talent on an as needed basis,  and that they will be easier to find. If you are in the position of needing help, but able to afford hiring someone permanently, then a finding a VA is a perfect solution for you.
  5. Shopping Trends Defined as SO/LO/MO. When the previously mentioned Mobile trend merges with the Social and Local trends, new art marketing opportunities will arise.  The shop Local trend is on the rise, as is search engines focusing more on providing local information. Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and other social media platforms are putting great emphasis on promoting local search and advertising. Mobile responsive websites make this trend viable. Become part of the “buy local” movement in your area. You will help other businesses find new customers, and the halo effect will help yours.
  6. Moms and Millennials Are Driving the Buying Trends. The two groups most behind mobile shopping trends are Millennials (Born between 1975ish – 2000ish) and their moms. They are constantly connected. They provide opinions and rely on those of their friends opinions, and they use social rating and recommendation sites to make buying decisions. Moving forward, it will be important to monitor and reply to what’s being said about your business online. Doing this is not as daunting as it seems. It’s an ideal task for a virtual assistant. Want to be talked about, there may be no better crowd than Mommy bloggers to have touting your work.
  7. Facebook Is Not the Be All or End All. Facebook is still growing, but not much in the U.S. It is losing its “cool factor” with Millennials who increasingly don’t want to share on the same site as their parents. Twitter continues in second place to Facebook as the most used social media by both consumers and businesses. But 2013 could see a shakeup from newer social sites as Pinterest, Tumblr and other visually oriented social media grab the attention of Millennial and younger consumers. And don’t rule out Google+: The site’s unique visitors grew by an impressive 80% in 2012. I’m seeing more blogs using a Pinterest layout, maybe emulating its design would work for you.
